Level 2: Transition
When our students demonstrate the emotional health, personal vision, and hard skills required for independent living, they move into apartments in Sugar Land, Texas, about twenty miles from the ranch. In this vibrant Houston suburb, our young women experience the same independence as college students or working adults, but with the daily support of mentors, therapists, and supportive peers who know them well.
From their new home base in Sugar Land, Texas, students live, work, and study independently while navigating the day to day realities of apartment living. During Phase Three, Fulshear students are encouraged to take increasing responsibility for themselves in all areas of life, including personal schedule, school and work obligations, social life, and self-care. While navigating the joys and stresses of independence during Phases 5, 6, & 7, students construct a clear strategy for their next step-an independent life in the world as empowered, capable women.
Phase 5: TRANSITION
The challenging work of the previous phases prepares the client for this phase during which the Fulshear team helps the client complete the next level of life skills training:
Budgeting Basics
Time Management (creation of daily schedule for Transition)
Resume and Cover Letter Preparation
Interviewing Skills
Phase 6: MOVEMENT TOWARDS SUPPORTED INDEPENDENCE
Having secured 30 hours in any combination of paid employment, volunteer service, or class time, the client spends 5 days and nights per week in the Sugar Land apartments. During this time they continue to receive the support of weekly Individual Therapy, continued Family Therapy, daily Group Therapy, individualized Coaching, and daily activities. The client demonstrates enthusiasm in mentoring clients in the prior phases.
Phase 7: PREPARED FOR SUCCESS
Having demonstrated adult-level accountability and initiative, and the client makes full transition to apartment living. She continues to participate in programming, but requirements become more individualized. Successful completion of this phase requires a thoroughly prepared Graduation Plan.

The Town of Sugar Land
With a census of around 80,000 and easy access to Houston and Houston airports, Sugar Land, Texas is big enough to offer lots of work and study options for our students, but small enough to be safe and manageable. The town was selected by Forbes in 2008 as one of three "Top Suburbs to Live Well" in the Houston area. Because Sugar Land continues to experience strong job growth despite this challenging economy, Fulshear students continue to have access to a wide selection of jobs. These opportunities include work in schools, the town's luxury hotels, professional offices, coffee shops and restaurants, retail, etc.
