Because cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is an efficient short-term therapy with self-help applications, it's a terrific approach to use with emerging adults.

Cognitive behavioral therapy is a systematic and goal oriented method of psychotherapy that is a clinically-proven treatment for a variety of issues including anxiety, depression, bulimia, substance abuse, and personality disorders. CBT approaches are designed around the assumption that thoughts lead to feelings. Rational thoughts lead to appropriate emotional responses and irrational thoughts lead to dysfunctional emotional reactions and, therefore, behaviors. As such, Fulshear therapists engage with students at a cognitive, or thinking, level during CBT, appealing to logic in order to reframe flawed cognitive processes that lead to irrational emotional responses. Some CBT-oriented practitioners refer to "internal tapes" that we record in childhood or following traumatic events and then play back habitually; these tapes represent automatic, but flawed, ways of thinking about life. By bringing these internal messages to a conscious level, it then becomes possible for the therapist to help the patient record new "tapes" that represent more functional ways of thinking. The result is a more rational response to everyday events and situations t

Recognizing that undesirable behaviors are often driven by strongly held but flawed beliefs, we work with students to bring these beliefs to consciousness where they can be replaced with a more accurate and functional understanding of things. The skill-based component of CBT helps students practice new habits in a highly conscious and goal-oriented manner.
